John A. Patterson MD, MSPH, FAAFP
Dr. John Patterson graduated from Vanderbilt with a psychology degree and has viewed his entire medical career through a mind body lens, including medical school at the University of Tennessee, followed by a family medicine residency, preventive medicine residency and master’s in public health from the U of Kentucky. He is certified in family medicine, integrative holistic medicine, mind body medicine, mindful medical practice, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), physician coaching and yoga therapy.
Inspired to become a physician by the humanitarian example of Albert Schweitzer, Dr. Patterson spent 30 years in under-served rural Estill County/Irvine, Kentucky in private solo practice. His office staff included an LCSW counselor and PhD dietitian (who was also a Catholic nun). He was volunteer medical director of the local hospice.
Dr Patterson is past president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians, associate professor in the U of Kentucky College of Medicine, adjunct faculty for Saybrook College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences (Pasadena CA) and the Center for Mind Body Medicine (Washington, DC). He chairs the Lexington Medical Society’s Physician Wellness Commission and operates the Mind Body Studio in Lexington, where he offers consultations and group classes for persons with stress-related chronic conditions and burnout prevention for health professionals, health care organizations, academic departments, teachers, businesses, workplace teams, board retreats, faith communities and non-profits- emphasizing a mindfulness-based approach to promoting resilience, managing stress, preventing burnout and cultivating joy, meaning and compassion.
Dr. Patterson has taught MBSR courses since 2009 and has taught 26 classes.
