In the age of AI, what role does mindfulness play, and why do we still need to practice?
Every day it becomes easier to outsource attention, avoid discomfort, simulate connection without relationship, and live inside systems designed to anticipate and monetize our impulses before we have fully formed our intentions. What happens to our attention, our presence, our liberty, our compassion?
1. Attention Exploitation
Every app, feed, platform, and notification is designed to capture your attention before you have consciously chosen where to place it.
AI makes this more powerful. It personalizes the hook, generates endless content, anticipates what you might want next, and keeps adapting until your attention is no longer something you direct. It's something being taken from you. We are in an attention economy, after all.
Want to reclaim it? Mindfulness can help. There is no simple solution. Just reading a book won't do it. But a consistent mindfulness practice builds something specific: the ability to notice when you are choosing to give your attention, and when someone is trying to take it.
2. Presence in an Always-on World
Remember when having twenty tabs open in your browser felt like a lot? Now imagine twenty AI agents running simultaneously, an army of tireless, always-on assistants tackling problems around the clock. We're not fully there yet, but we're heading there fast.
For technology, single-tasking is a limitation. Downtime is a problem to be solved.
For biological human beings, perpetual multitasking and 100% availability are a recipe for losing your mind.
Presence is the capacity to be where you are. To do one thing at a time. When washing the dishes, just wash the dishes. When eating, just eat. Mindfulness trains presence by returning us to direct experience: the breath, the body, the sound in the room, the person in front of us. It teaches us to stop treating every moment as a launchpad to somewhere else.
3. Liberty in a Technocracy
Liberty is protected freedom. And protection requires shared accountability, laws, institutions, and norms that constrain what can be done to us without our consent.
We have never had more options. But options are not liberty. You are not free simply because you can choose between a thousand streaming services, or because an algorithm will helpfully suggest which one. Remember that the systems shaping your choices are accountable only to their own growth.
AI has outpaced that accountability entirely. There are no meaningful protections governing what can be done with your attention, your data, your habits, and your children's developing minds. The exploitation is legal, optimized, and invisible.
Mindfulness builds something essential: the awareness to see the cage, and the clarity to want something better. It creates the conditions for the collective action that will be needed.
4. Fake Plastic Compassion
It is increasingly possible to become entirely self-sufficient. Need help cooking rice? You used to call your mom. Now you ask AI. Looking for a restaurant recommendation, a movie, an attentive ear, someone to tell you they care? AI.
But real compassion comes from real connection. And real connection requires sacrifice and reciprocity. Compassion will become what it once was: a natural byproduct of people who have chosen to show up for each other. Mindfulness practice communities are where that happens. Where people give and take, need and are needed, and discover that the friction of dealing with other human beings is not a problem to be solved by AI replacement. It's what makes it worthy and real.

So does mindfulness still matter?
Yes. Not as a productivity hack or a corporate wellness program, but as a practice of staying human inside a world increasingly shaped by machines. Protecting our attention, keeping us anchored to the present moment, guarding us from enslavement to our own impulses, and reminding us that the greatest source of pain is also the greatest source of joy: one another.
